Decorating Tips for Small Spaces
Small Pic

From clever storage solutions to simple room dividers, learn how to make the most of your small-space with these creative design tips

Organize furniture into zones

Organize your furniture into a functional groups as the distinct zones will help make the space feel much larger.  Arrange the furniture away from the walls to add volume to the room.  Give a small seating group flair by adding pops of art and wall hangings. Layer pillows for extra interest, but make sure the scale of the accessories doesn’t overwhelm the furniture.

Choose multifunctional furniture
The best way to maximize a small amount of space usually involves making one thing serve two or three purposes. This is not only small space design, but it's sustainable design. The more multi-functional a piece of furniture is, the less you'll have to buy or bring in to your home. Be smart and simple — a storage bed, a dining table/office desk, a sleeper sofa.

Create hidden storage

In a limited space, every square inch is potential storage. Stashing sweater boxes under the bed is one thing, but if you raise the bed frame on blocks and add a voluminous skirt, you can also store a set of luggage under there. Place a storage ottoman under the window to hold extra bedding. Use a chest as a bedside table to gain drawer space. Make the most of your closet with an organizer system. And look for wall space where you can hang a bookshelf.

Use all available space

To use all available wall space and height, a floor-to-ceiling bookcase can double as storage cabinets on the bottom. Include a spot for the television that also works as computer monitor. In the middle of the bookcase, use a hidden shelf for the keyboard and mouse below it, and use the top shelves to store many books.

Match furniture to the wall colour

Stick to the same colour palette for your walls and furnishings; it helps fool your eye into thinking a room is more spacious. Use neutral colours with small pieces of bold colours to accent the view.

Use mirrors effectively

Mirrors are another great way to give the illusion of more space. A well-positioned mirror can act like a window to visually increase space and also throw light into a room. Other ways to trick the eye: hanging curtains from ceiling to floor so the room feels taller. Using stripes can have the same effect.

Bring in as much natural light as possible.

Keep window treatments light and airy so that the natural light can shine through or install drapes that can be pulled back to let the light flood in.  For evenings or when there is minimal natural light use additional lighting to maximize each area of the room. A dark corner is a great place for a floor lamp or an accent table with a lamp for reading.
